How to Repair a Dead Car Key

Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the small key ring on the top, where it joins the keyfob. It's believed to be made of very soft metal or plastic. I've done a hole in the wall and then wet-sanded it to make it more durable. But I'm guessing that's not helping.
I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring using clear tape, but it didn't work to be any better. It's a shame because I use the ring to hold my keys in place on the tiny mini-splitring that holds the larger split rings for the other keyfobs.
